Part B · Steering and sailing rules · Rule 11
Application
11 Rules in this Section apply to vessels in sight of one another.
- “Rules in this Section”Section II of Part B, “Conduct of vessels in sight of one another”, which is Rules 11 to 18: sailing vessels, overtaking, head-on, crossing, the duties of the give-way and stand-on vessels, and responsibilities between vessels.
- “apply to vessels in sight of one another”Rule 3(k) says vessels are in sight of one another only when one can be observed visually from the other: by eye, by day or by her lights at night. A vessel seen only on radar or AIS is not in sight.
Rules 13 to 18 decide who gives way, but only once you can see the other vessel. If you can’t see her and you are in or near restricted visibility, Rule 19 applies instead, and there is no stand-on or give-way vessel. As soon as she comes into sight, Rules 11 to 18 apply.
